Navigating Middle School...Together

The unique needs and concerns of our Middle School students are addressed through a comprehensive guidance program provided in individual, small group, and large group settings. Topics addressed include academic guidance, study skills, social relationships, media awareness, internet safety, and health and wellness.

Overview of Programs and Services

  • Full orientation to Middle School for both students and parents, as well as supplemental parent informational evenings
  • Introduction to career exploration through assessment of learning style preferences and identification of talents
  • Standardized achievement test coordination and follow-up
  • Additional consultation with students, teachers, and parents as needed to promote each student’s academic, personal, and social growth and success
Grade-level specific guidance programs also are offered to further address age-appropriate topics.

  • Grade 6

    • Girl Talk – Peer-to-peer mentoring program that builds self-esteem, develops leadership, and recognizes the value of service. This program pairs Viz Upper School student mentors with sixth-grade students to address topics such as self-image, peer relationships, self-health, internet safety, and more.
    • Study Skills Class (1st quarter) – Tips to improve organization, study skills, and test-taking skills.
  • Grades 7 and 8

    • Owning Up – Created in collaboration with children and teens, this self-empowerment program focuses on dignity for everyone and provides a safe environment to discuss issues faced by students such as conflict resolution, positive relationships, communication skills, self-confidence, body image, internet safety, influence of media and pop culture, and more.
    • Study Skills (during advisory and after school) – Tips to improve organization, study skills, and test-taking skills.
In addition to these counseling programs and services, the Viz Middle School has a dedicated counselor for students and families in Grades 6-8, Ashley Giljum, and her door is always open. Catie Tyler also provides counseling for students in our Middle and Lower Schools.

Visitation Academy is an independent, private Catholic school offering a coeducational Montessori preschool and Kindergarten program, the area's only all-girl elementary program for Grades 1-5, and an all-girl middle school and all-girl high school.
