Our Grade 5 students recently transformed cardboard into creativity by designing and building their very own arcade games! This hands-on project invited them to dive into the entire engineering design process, from brainstorming initial ideas to building and troubleshooting their creations. They learned how to sketch blueprints, choose materials, and follow each step of the engineering cycle, discovering the importance of both creativity and precision.
Beyond just building games, students practiced problem-solving skills, adapting and reworking their designs to overcome challenges and make their games function smoothly. They learned the value of collaboration, too, working together to test each other's ideas, provide feedback, and find solutions as a team. These are real-world skills that will serve them in countless future projects, both in and out of the classroom.
Once the games were ready, students from Grades 3 and 4 came to test them out, adding a whole new level of excitement to the experience! Seeing younger students enjoy the games they created gave the Grade 5 students a sense of accomplishment and joy. This project was more than just fun—it was an inspiring way to blend creativity, engineering, and teamwork into a memorable learning experience.
